Wilson House Eco-Remodel

By Renee Dake Wilson

Our 3 bedroom, 2 bath house is in West Hollywood near the Pacific Design Center at 8717 Dorrington Avenue. It was built in 1923, added on to and remodeled in the '80's, and remodeled by us in 2000 when we fixed a lot of plumbing and structural problems. My husband, Brian, and I have an architecture practice together and we are interested in incorporating sustainability into our projects wherever a client will have it. Our house has been a great testing ground for these interests. Following are some sustainable features of our home:

  • 2.5 kW solar array, grid tied, Southern CA Edison net metering program, built using the CA Energy Commission buy-down program.
  • Energy star appliances
  • Windows, clerestory, large roll-up door, and operable skylights provide lots of natural light and ventilation.
  • Light house and roof color and tree shading reduce heat gain
  • The rear yard is drought tolerant landscaping.
  • The turf in the front yard has been replaced with a lower water using groundcover that works with the needs of our large magnolia tree.
  • Sustainable materials used include cork flooring in the bedroom, reclaimed douglas fir kitchen floor, and Biofiber™ (made from agricultural waste and by-products) bathroom cabinets.
  • The house is centrally located and amenities in the vicinity greatly reduce our need for a car. We can walk/stroller to the playground, city pool, grocery store, restaurants, post office, hardware store, etc.
  • We bike 1.2 miles to and from our office every day.
